Ngorongoro Conservation Area

 
 
 
 

 

The park is located between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. It is home to the famous volcanic Ngorongoro crater which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The crater (610 metres deep and 260 km squared) is a microcosm of East African scenery and game and is usually visited on the way back from the Serengeti to Arusha. Scenic grandeur and stunning views are the hallmark of this wonder of the world. All the lodges are built high on the crater rim and afford amazing views over and into the crater - the perfect setting for a well deserved sundowner.

Activites and Special Interests: A Bird watching, photography, walking safaris in the Ngorongoro highlands.

Wildlife: There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black-maned males. There are lots of colourful flamingoes and a variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor. More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. Other game: leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts.

Accommodation: There are a number of lodges and camps to stay at on the rim of the Crater. Lodges: Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge and Ngorongoro Serena. Camps: Most campers stay at Simba site.

Serengeti National Park

 

The park covers 14,763 sq km of endless rolling plains, which reach up to the Kenyan border and extends almost to Lake Victoria. The park is teaming with stunning wildlife - it is thought that over 3 million large mammals roam the plains. In May or early June you can witness the annual migration of millions of zebra and wildebeest in search of water and forage as the seasons change.

Activites and Special Interests: Archeologists will be interested in Olduvai Gorge which is in the Conservation Area and where it is possible to see the famous discoveries of remains of early Man by Mary and Louis Leakey. However most of the activity is within the crater which is popular for bird watching, photography, walking safaris, and game viewing from a vehicle (4 wheel drive).

Wildlife: Large herds of antelope of all sorts including: Patterson's eland, Klipspringer, Dikdik, impala, Zebra, gazelles, water, bush and reed buck, topi, kongoni, cotton's oribi, grey bush duiker, roan antelope buffalo, and wildebeest. Plus: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bat eared fox, hunting dog and jackal. Smaller mammals: spring hare, porcupine, warthog, hyraxes, baboon, vervet monkey, colobus monkey, patas monkey, and mongooses. Larger mammals: giraffe, rhino, elephant, hippopotamus. Nearly 500 species of bird, including vultures, storks, flamingoes, martial and fish eagles, ostrich. Reptiles: crocodiles, a number of species of snakes and lizards.

Accommodation: There are a number of lodges and camps to stay at in the Serengeti. Lodges: Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Lobo Wildlife Lodge, Ndutu Safari Lodge (near Olduvai Gorge) Serengeti Serena Lodge, and Serengeti Sopa Lodge. Camps: Kijesereshi Tented lodge just outside the camp south of Nsabaaka Gate (north west of the Park) and Migration camp around the Lobo area. There are public camp sites (very basic some without even water), 6 special camp sites and 12 wilderness camp site.

Tarangire National Park

 

The park is located 120km from Arusha south east of Manyara. This park has a particularly dense wildlife population between June - October. This national park is home to thousands of elephant, and in the dry season game congregates along the river having migrated from the Masai Mara. This park is symbolised by the Baobab tree, growing in open acacia woodland. Tarangire is an ornithologists paradise rich in birds of prey and an incredible diversity of avifauna.
 
Activites and Special Interests: Bird watching, photography, walking safaris, and ornithology (October - May).
 
Wildlife: Large herds of antelope of all sorts including: eland, lesser kudu, Kongoni, impala, Zebra, gazelles, buffalo, wildebeest, leopard, elephant, rhino and lots of smaller mammals.

Arusha National Park

 

Pick up from hotel or similar at 9:00am and drive to and tour Arusha National Park.

HIGHLIGHTS OF ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK:  Formerly Ngurdoto Crater Highland National park until 1967. The national Park covers an area of about 137sq. km. It is located near Arusha town between the peaks of Mountains Kilimanjaro and Meru. The park and the town derive their name from Wa -Arusha people who traditionally leave in this area. The Ngurdoto Crater, Momella Lakes, the highland montane forest and the rugged Mount Meru (4575m) are the four distinctive features of the park. The park has a wealth of wildlife including Colobus monkeys, velvet monkeys, bushbucks, buffalos, red forest duikers, hippos, elephants and giraffes. Birdlife especially waterfowl is abundant and interesting. Overnight at the Leopard Hotel or similar bed and breakfast /catch flight back home.

DAY 2: From Lake Manyara to the Ngorongoro Crater, this drive can takes 1 hour until you reach at the gate. In the eastern side you will see the Rift Valley, animals like elephant, buffalos, zebra, monkey, birds as well as viewing the rim crater. The concentration of wild animals can be found in the huge and perfect crater of Ngorongoro. This park is spectacular in the dry season when many of the migratory wildlife species come back to the permanent waters of Tarangire River. Huge herds of wildebeest, zebras, elephants, elands and Oryx gather to stay in Tarangire until the onset of the rain when they migrate again to good grazing areas. Then in the late evening drive back to Moshi at the Leopard Hotel or similar for overnight bed and breakfast / catch flight back home.

Walks around the lake and streams and waterfalls along the nearby escarpment make for a fantastic adventure off the beaten track. If you are strength enough, you can climb Oldonyo Lengai which is an active Volcano, overnight at Natron Tented camp or similar full board.

DAY 3: Drive to Serengeti National Park takes about 4 to 5 hours – depending on the road condition. Serengeti is the oldest National Park and undoubtedly one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the world. After doing a game drive in Lobo area, overnight at Lobo Wildlife Lodge or similar full board.

DAY 4: After breakfast venture into the corners of wilderness Serengeti for a full day game viewing in the park. Picnic lunch besides you, take your leisure while exploring the only truly world heritage site, where largest concentration of plain game on earth still exists! In the late evening back to the Lodge for rest (there is a swimming poll!), dinner and overnight.
