Tanzania:

Welcome to Africa's friendliest country. This is a website that is dedicated to the finest forms of Tanzanian Culture and Tourism.

These pages have been designed with the best interest of the traveler in mind, and for those who are looking to find out more about Tanzanian Culture and it's friendly people, and the land that boasts of the third highest mountain in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro and the exquisite beaches of Pangani & Zanzibar.

TOURISM: Can be defined as the act of travel for the purpose of recreation, and the provision of services for this act. A tourist is someone who travels at least eighty kilometers (fifty miles) from home for the purpose of recreation, as defined by the World Tourism Organization (a United Nations body).

A more comprehensive definition would be that tourism is a service industry, comprising a number of tangible and intangible components. The tangible elements include transport systems - air, rail, road, water and now, space; hospitality services - accommodation, foods and beverages, tours, souvenirs; and related services such as banking, insurance and safety & security. The intangible elements include: rest and relaxation, culture, escape, adventure, new and different experiences.

MIGRATION: The seasonal game migration across the vast Serengeti plain remains one of the greatest natural events in the world. The Ngorongoro Crater (now a world heritage site), Lake Manyara National Park and the Serengeti together offer an exceptional safari holiday.

KILIMANJARO: The highest mountain in Africa is Kilimanjaro.  Its snow-capped peak dominates the surrounding plains.  A climb takes six nights and for the more energetic this is a lifetime experience and an achievement not to be missed.

SAFARI: In the Serengeti the great migrations normally begin around the end of May when the herds move northwards to cross the rivers separating Tanzania and Kenya. They return south in late October to early November. If you are traveling outside these times the population of resident game remains high.

The central plateau experiences hot days and cool nights. The hilly country between the coast and northern highlands has pleasant climate from January to September, with temperatures averaging around 20C. Temperatures vary around Kilimanjaro according to the season, registering as low as 15C during May to August rising to 22C during December to March. For the whole country, the hottest months are from October to February. The main, long rainy season is from mid-March to May.

LANGUAGE: English is widely spoken but a few words of Kiswahili are always appreciated.

CURRENCY: The unit of currency is the Tanzanian shilling, which is divided into hundred cents. Visitors can take any amount of foreign currency, no currency declaration is required, but import and export of Tanzania currency is illegal.

Most major currencies, particularly US Dollars, Euro and Travelers cheques are accepted and are convertible at banks and bureau de change in the main towns and tourist areas. Credit cards, mainly Visa and MasterCard, are generally only accepted in large establishments.

ON SAFARI: Distances in Tanzania are vast, and travel by road can be tiring. It is wise to spend more time in fewer parks. You will see more and won't return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quite to avoid distressing them. Always follow the instructions of your ranger or guide. Don't leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognized tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

WHAT TO WEAR: It never gets really cold in Tanzania, so lightweight clothing is the norm. On safari avoid brightly colored clothes, they may alarm the animals. Browns, beiges and khakis are preferred. Short sleeve shirts/blouses and shorts are ideal, but pack a sweater, as it can be a bit chilly in the early morning and in the evening. Wear a hat to avoid sunburns and don't forget a swim suit. Shoes should be sensible, and for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Meru, take a thermal underwear, a rain jacket, a pair or two of good socks and sturdy boots. Shorts for women are acceptable - but not too short. Women should carry a wrap to cover their legs in towns or villages as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and other Muslim areas. On the beach, within the confines of beach hotels, normal swim wear is acceptable, but nudity certainly is not.
